Cloud Serverpowered by OpenStack

Virtual machines in Switzerland — exactly as you need them. stepping stone operates cloud servers on Swiss infrastructure: Linux or Windows, three performance tiers ranging from Enterprise to Developer, scalable and with 99.9% availability.

With stepping stone’s cloud servers, you can flexibly build your IT environment on Swiss infrastructure — without having to purchase or maintain your own hardware. Virtual machines running Linux or Windows can be customised and scaled at any time.

Three performance tiers cater to different requirements: Enterprise, with redundant distribution across both data centres and no CPU overbooking for critical workloads. Standard, with slightly overbooked CPUs (factor ≤ 1.5) in a single data centre, for production applications. Developer, with shared CPUs (factor ≤ 3.0), as a cost-effective entry-level option for development and testing. Three storage tiers are available: NVMe SSD for databases, SATA SSD for applications, and SATA HDD for mass storage and backups. All data is stored with triple redundancy and is encrypted. Management is carried out via the dashboard, CLI or Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and OpenTofu. Enterprise VMs switch between data centres via live migration without interruption. stepping stone guarantees 99.9% availability on Swiss infrastructure.

IT teams, developers and businesses that wish to operate their infrastructure flexibly in Switzerland — from development environments to business-critical production systems. For organisations that want to rent exactly the resources they need and scale up or down at any time.

Typical use cases: production application servers and databases on enterprise infrastructure; development and test environments with a cost-effective entry point via developer-class instances; scalable web servers and microservices; and Infrastructure-as-Code workflows using Terraform, OpenTofu or the OpenStack CLI.

The bandwidth of stepping stone AG will be calculated with the 95%-rule.The 95%-rule is a common standard.

Calculation of the 95%-rule

When you have ordered a bandwidth of 1 Megabit/s and are connected to a 100 Megabit/s line, the Committed Data Rate (CDR) is 1 Megabit/s with a burst rate of 100 Megabit/s. The Committed Data Rate will be invoiced independently of the usage, as this bandwidth is fixed reserved for you. The burst rate of 100 Megabit/s is “best effort” and will be invoiced according to the 95%-rule, which is calculated as follows:
