Networkingpowered by OpenStack

Your networks, your rules — on Swiss infrastructure. stepping stone offers Software-Defined Networking based on OpenStack Neutron: public ip addresses, private ip addresses, virtual networks, routers and security groups, fully configurable and with triple-redundant internet connectivity.

With Software-Defined Networking, you can design your network topology within the stoney cloud to suit your individual requirements. The private virtual networks are built using OpenStack Neutron and can be fully automated via API, CLI or Infrastructure as Code.

Create private networks with freely selectable IP ranges, connect them via virtual routers, and connect your VMs to one or more networks. Each VM has a private IPv4 address by default and can also be assigned a public IPv4 address. Security Groups protect your VMs with freely configurable firewall rules — even within the same network, VMs can be specifically isolated or access to individual services permitted. From simple set-ups to complex environments with a DMZ and multiple isolated segments: you design the architecture; stepping stone operates it — reliably and with a triple-redundant internet connection.

IT teams and system administrators who want to have complete control over their cloud infrastructure — whether it’s a simple corporate network, a multi-tier architecture with a DMZ, or a complex multi-tenant environment with strict isolation.

Typical use cases: Setting up private networks with freely selectable IP ranges for cloud servers and GPU servers; multi-tier network architectures with a DMZ and isolated segments; firewall configuration via security groups for granular access control; automated network provisioning via OpenTofu, Terraform or Ansible.

Swiss data centres. Triple-redundant internet connection. Full control over your topology.

Software-defined networking based on OpenStack Neutron. Private networks with freely selectable IP ranges, virtual routers and dynamic allocation of public IPv4 addresses. Security groups for firewall rules per VM — including isolation within the same network. VMs can be connected to multiple networks. Complex environments, including DMZs, can be implemented. Can be automated via API, CLI, OpenTofu, Terraform and Ansible. An integral part of stoney cloud. Personalised consultancy and operation provided by stepping stone in Bern.

Scope of services

Software-Defined Networking

Private networks with freely selectable IP ranges, virtual routers for connecting multiple networks, and dynamic allocation of public IPv4 addresses. VMs can be connected to one or more networks. Even complex topologies with a DMZ and isolated segments can be implemented.

Security Groups and VM Isolation

Freely configurable firewall rules per VM via security groups. VMs within the same network can be specifically isolated or granted access to individual services. Granular access control without the need for additional hardware.

Supervised operation

Triple-redundant internet connection with high bandwidths. Managed via the OpenStack dashboard, CLI or Infrastructure as Code using OpenTofu, Terraform and Ansible. stepping stone operates the network infrastructure on Swiss systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The bandwidth of stepping stone AG will be calculated with the 95%-rule.The 95%-rule is a common standard.

Calculation of the 95%-rule

When you have ordered a bandwidth of 1 Megabit/s and are connected to a 100 Megabit/s line, the Committed Data Rate (CDR) is 1 Megabit/s with a burst rate of 100 Megabit/s. The Committed Data Rate will be invoiced independently of the usage, as this bandwidth is fixed reserved for you. The burst rate of 100 Megabit/s is “best effort” and will be invoiced according to the 95%-rule, which is calculated as follows:
